TikTok has announced the implementation of new generative AI labels and media literacy resources. These measures aim to help users better understand how AI is being used and misused on the platform and across the web.
TikTok is collaborating with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to establish a process for identifying AI-modified content uploaded from external sources. Videos uploaded to TikTok will be scanned for AI markers and labeled accordingly in-stream. This capability is already rolling out for images and videos, with audio-only content to follow soon.
In addition to the C2PA project, TikTok has already implemented compulsory labels for content created with its own in-stream generative AI tools. While not foolproof, as not all generative AI projects are part of the C2PA initiative, these measures are a step towards enhancing AI transparency and limiting the spread of misinformation.
To further support user awareness, TikTok is working with MediaWise to develop generative AI media literacy campaigns. Throughout the year, 12 videos will be released, highlighting universal media literacy skills and explaining how TikTok’s AI labeling tools can help contextualize content. A campaign will also be launched to raise awareness about AI labeling and potentially misleading AI-generated content.
